Childcare Facility
Krackerjax Learning Center
Kimberly Baggett

Birmingham, Alabama - Krackerjax Learning Center owner, Kimberly Baggett, opened her highly successful child care facility in 1993 in Duncanville.  Within two years, she opened a second location in Centreville.  She currently operates a single location in Centreville.

In 1993, prior to opening her business, Kimberly contacted the University of Alabama Small Business Development Center.  In need of debt financing, she was looking for assistance in researching and writing a business plan she could take to her local bank.  Over a period of a few weeks, the center provided her guidance on the construction of a business plan, local market research and estimates of operating costs and revenues for a child care facility.  She went on to construct her plan, which the center reviewed and edited.  Kimberly then carried her completed plan to her local bank and obtained $150,000 to open Krackerjax Learning Center.  According to Baggett, “the Small Business Development Center was instrumental in my obtaining the loan.  If it weren’t for the expert research and advice they provided, the local bank would not have been as willing to give me the opportunity to borrow the money.”

Since 1993, at its peak, Krackerjax has had as many as 120 children attend its facilities and upwards of 30 employees.  At this time, Krackerjax is providing child care to 76 children and employs 18 full time or part time workers.

In January of 2005, Krackerjax Learning Center was awarded a four year grant by the State of Alabama’s Office of School Readiness to support the center’s efforts to provide quality pre-school instruction to its four-year-olds class.   With the award, Krackerjax became one of only 53 state-funded pre-kindergarten programs in Alabama.
